In 1932, during the fascist period, the idea was born to collect in a single, imposing, monument-ossuary,all the Italian bodies present in the numerous war cemeteries scattered on theAsiago Plateau.

The shrine was designed by the architect Orpheus Rossato of Venice and was completed in 1936. Two years later, in 1938, all The Italian bodies were transferred there. At the end of the 1960s, however, austria agreed to transferthe bodies of austro-Hungarian soldiers, who remained to rest in the remaining cemeteries. The Austrians, however, demanded that five Austro-Hungarian cemeteries of the then 8 remaining could remain where they were.
